Personally, I think self–care embodies 5 dimensions that often overlap constantly. Finding balance in all dimensions will bring you peace & harmony and today we’re addressing all dimensions and the importance of finding balance in each.
Physical self-care is the most common form of self-care. When you exercise physical self-care on a consistent basis you respect your body, you increase your confidence, you maintain health & radiate ! Implementing some of these physical self-care aspects into your daily or weekly routine will go a long way, give them a go!
Regular exercise routine
Intentional & mindful eating
Taking a hot bath, getting a spa treatment, getting your nails done
Exercising physical affirmations, such as admiring at least one physical aspect of your body
Thanking your body for everything it is and does for you
Intellectual self–care encompasses activities that stimulate your mind. Engaging in intellectual stimulation will sharpen your mind, improve mental cognition, and expand your knowledge base. Intellectual self–care will leave you engaged, interested, and looking for ways to change things for the better! As once said, “Curiosity especially intellectual inquisitiveness, is what separates the truly alive from those who are merely going through the motions.” Anyone that encourages, inspires and participates in intellectual self-care and growth is worth keeping around. Read on for types of intellectual self–care that you can exercise daily which will leave you fulfilled and enriched.
Practice a new hobby or research subjects that interest you
Read new books and re-read old favorites
Indulge in mentally stimulating documentaries, movies, or theater (and discuss the thought provoking plots)
Test your brain power with puzzles, games & teasers
Learn a new language
As human beings, we need to be connected to others, to have relationships, develop relationships and have a sense of belonging, purpose and commonplace. Social self–care aims to nurture your relationships and keep your social circle healthy, supportive, and loving. Be mindful to surround yourself with those who will lift you up, inspire, appreciate and protect you . Remember, it’s never too late to take charge of your social self–care by:
Eliminating toxic relationships
Saying “yes” to relationships & activities that actually fulfill you- not out of obligation
Engage and develop in relationships that make you feel wholesome & loved
Seek & develop companionship from the most loyal companions- pets
Take breaks from social media
For most, I think Emotional self–care means balance. Emotional self–care increases ones ability to read and understand their own and others emotions, it keeps stress levels at a manageable level and mood and demeanor balanced. Practicing emotional self-care is important and ties into the success of all other aspects of self-care. Ways to practice emotional self-care:
Be gratefule and remind yourself of your blessings everyday
Practice forgiveness towards yourself & others
Consistently work towards building a positive and loving relationship with yourself
Talk to loved ones about your problems and struggles
Delegate tasks or take them off your schedule during stressful peaks
You aren’t and don’t have to be perfect, remind yourself daily
Spiritual self–care reaches past your intellect on a more personal level. It causes you to dig deep into your soul and connect you with the world. Spiritual and mental self–care helps us understand our purpose in this life and gives us greater meaning to life, understand who we are, and foster a true love of one’s self. Spiritual & mental self–care includes:
Participate in religious activities and ceremonies
Experience nature (feel a connection with your surroundings)
Spend quality time with yourself
Learn more about yourself through personality assessments, evaluating personal goals etc.
This wraps up our series of self-care. I hope you find some of these tips helpful and take the time to implement self-care into your life!
